The Trampoline

reus.jpg

Most of you have never seen this thing because you don’t live in Rotterdam. Some of you do live in Rotterdam, but have never had the tendency to look up after going to the movies at Venster/Lantaarn (Gouvernestraat, Rotterdam). Again, there are some who do live in Rotterdam and look up after going to the movies, yet seeing nothing but a faint image overgrown with plants and stuff… Here’s Rigardus when he was still ‘bald’. Gyz took this picture after the infamous Space Invader had left his mark in the down left corner of the photograph. Under the right circumstances one can see them smiling at each other… Dude!

The Rotterdam Giant (who actually used to live in the same street, in the Nighttown offices) and his creators are proud to thank these guys right here for support and realisation!

Our friend Geert Mul once claimed that it looks like a big trampoline, attached to the wall… We’ve been calling it that ever since.

Switch!

Participating in a group show is never easy. It’s especially hard when the idea of the exhibition is ‘work together in the same space for about a month and be influenced by the other’. My oh my… After no one really showed up or was even planning to be influenced by someone other but themselves, I started writing little articles about my colleagues and left out all politeness. Politeness is often used in the weird world of art(ists) to be sure of return compliments. Anyway, I put those articles on the wall and waited for the shit to hit the fan. Finally some of my co-workers were getting the hang of it and started actually writing stuff all over my ‘art’. Later, when the exhibition was over, I came by to pick up my papers only to find out someone had already taken my work off the wall and claimed to have ‘lost it’. Probably threw it the fuck away. Ha ha… Funny artists. Initiated by Saminte Ekeland and Rolf den Dunnen. Other participating artists: Roel Meelkop, Johan Kleinjan, Boris Pas, Bas Zoontjens and others.

Here’s a picture I couldn’t keep for myself, ha ha… Doesn’t Gyz look absolutely amazing? This is taken this summer when we were redecorating our present head office. Those sporting glasses are ACE!

Game Young

game boy.jpg

This was my first exhibition. In the year 1997. You have probally seen it on the old site. But I found an article about the Game Over expo written by Erwin van der Zande that is still on line. You can read it here (only in Dutch).

Still really young, haha..

SHAMELESS PLUGGING

echteliefde.jpg

This was the e-invitation we sent our friends and email-listing to let them know there was a screening in Rotown* (Rotterdam) of our new short film called Echte Liefde (int. title: True Love / out now on DVD on the Vogel Visions Label). Anyway, the images are shot on a graduation party at my old school. I had graduated long before the film was shot and was there kind of by accident. he he… It was M.A.Y.H.E.M. people. Life’s great when you’re young and dumb and that’s just what your friends the HuMobisten wanted to show you in this particular film. Let us know if you want to order a copy or, if you are in less a hurry, wait for the HuMobisten Compilation DVD ‘8 Super Films’, which will hopefully be released this year and will definately hold lots and lots of special features and never-before-seen-footage, YEAH!!!

and the winner is…

maaskant.jpg

Here’s a picture (again taken by the talented mr. Hanswijk) of an exhibition we made for the Maaskant Award, a prestigious academy award that can be won once a year by Rotterdam Willem de Kooning post graduates. Gyz —a certified Rotterdam post graduate— was nominated, so we cycled off to the academy that was once ‘ours’ and made this exhibition/installation of all the printed matter we made in two years time. Some with reference to other stuff we do such as the ‘Knakendisco’, the design for ‘Krakatau’ or all the stuff we made in the past for the smallest Gallery in Rotterdam, called De Aanschouw. Guess what, Gyz won the damn thing… Some people couldn’t believe it. I, on the other hand, would not have believed otherwise.

And you can quote me on that one!

Here’s that full page in Atmosphere (GAS publ. / Japan). Thanks to our good friend Femke Dekker, who also is a member of the ‘schaduwkabinet der subjectivisten’, if you’re a frequent net visitor, you prbly know what that is. if not check this out.

The picture is taken by Danielle van Ark, another friend. find her portfolio in the ‘photographers’ section of this
website.

Thank you, thank you, thank you…

Just say NO! to Franz Ferdinand

onee.jpg

What do you do when an entire town seems to go to a show you’re not really in the mood for. If you’re lucky your good friend Niels (DJ Postrock) takes you with him to the quiet town of Tilburg to rock out to the sound of Oneida (from Brooklyn, NY). Happened to me last friday, but because of all the good skateboard movie fun I totally forgot (dude!). Here’s a picture of them I found online somewhere. Their most recent album ‘secret wars’ came out on Rough Trade, holds 8 songs and is A REAL GOOD RECORD. References: Stoner/Kraut/Minimal/IndieRock/Punkrock/Experimental. Or, if you’re more into vibes instead of labels: awkward/restless/angry/melancholic/bitter/insane/ironic.
well, that’s that. It was a fun night.

Tokyo

japan.jpg

When I was in Tokyo (October 2002) the first issue of the magazine Atmosphere was been released by Gas (an Art & Design publisher). The HuMobisten had a page in that magazine. The release party was held in the Gas shop somewhere in Tokyo. Downstairs the shop there was a little exhibition with work of us among others like experimental jetset, Jop van Bennekom and many more. It was accidentally that it came out when I was in Tokyo during my one month trip in Japan with Geert Mul, Koot and Aki.
