The times they are a changin’

Some of you may have already seen song lyrics on this weblog that certainly
couldn’t be our own. These are lyrics I either find somehow suitable for my
or the worlds’ present situation, or I somehow found when looking out for
inspirations when working on something, or I just find amusing and want to
share their (sometimes hidden) quality with you, the secret spectator. Of
course I’m not gonna go into the ‘why I’m showing them’ for every individual
occasion, but just so you know it’s not just whimsycal, random or meaningless…

From the Elton John album ‘honky château’, comes the bizarre song ‘Rocket
Man’ (Lyrics by Bernie Taupin) about someone who practices an occupation
he does not necessarilly understand, but feels quite involved with anyway.
He especially seems to enjoy the solitude that comes with the line of work,
and meanwhile he’s able to miss his wife who packs his back before he’s off
to space, exploring Mars and other places not suited for family life.

Why do people sing that sort of stuff in one era and ‘Let’s get it started’ in the
next? Both songs might have been equally popular in their own time. In fact,
let’s put both lyrics in one and the same post and see if we can find something
there. (PS. I chose the song Lets get it Started because my friend Pieter Vos,
with whom I recently had a small debate, convinced me to believing this
particular song somehow captures a sort of ‘nothingness’ that on one hand
reflects a beautiful reality stripped from idealism and is on the other a scary
nightmare about a human capacity to settle for about anything that’s being
crammed down their throat. The era might ask of us to totally ignore the
difference between good and bad and thus be buddhistically ready for a
cold, ruthless world but I guess this here example nicely explains there’s a
real danger involved in finding everything equally beautiful and good. Before
you know it you’ll be enjoying something really evil, like Black Eyed Peas.

Rocket Man / 1972

She packed my bags last night pre-flight
Zero hour nine a.m.
And I’m gonna be high as a kite by then
I miss the earth so much I miss my wife
It’s lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight

And I think it’s gonna be a long long time
Till touch down brings me round again to find
I’m not the man they think i am at home
Oh no no no I’m a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone

Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact it’s cold as hell
And there’s no one there to raise them if you did
And all this science I don’t understand
It’s just my job five days a week
A rocket man, a rocket man

And I think it’s gonna be a long long time…

Let’s get it started / 2003

[Will.I.Am]
In this context there’s no disrespect
So when I bust my rhyme you break your necks
We got 5 minutes for us to disconnect
From all intellect and the let rhythm effect

To lose the inhibition, follow your intuition
Free your inner soul and break away from tradition
Cause when we beat out, girl it’s pulling without
You wouldn’t believe how we wow, owww
Burn it til it’s burned out
Turn it til it’s turned out
Actin’ up from north, west, east, south

Step by step like an infant, new kid
Inch by inch with a new solution
Transmit hits with no delusion
The feeling’s irresistible and that’s how we move it
