Although I suspect specialist shops to become THE thing of the near future, the ancient ones which have been here since (sometimes) decades appear to vanish one by one in the now. Bummer man, ‘they really tied the street together’. I guess they just weren’t made for these times…

Als je je afvroeg hoe het komt dat ineens heel masculien Rotterdam in plaats van met de gare kop met haar ‘waar je ’m in ken uittekenen’ nu ineens met een prima gesneden coiffure rondloopt: Schorem, de herenkapper. Ik ging zelf al sinds jaar en dag (nou ja, een kleine twee jaar) bij een der twee herenkappers en trof op zijn tot kapperij ingerichte kamer nog wel eens een dame die er net voor of net na mij aan de beurt was, maar dat is verleden tijd. Het is officieel, de islamistiek wint terrein op het contemporaine knip- en scheervlak: bij Schorem is het VERBODEN voor geroddel en, excusez le mot, kutpraatjes. Bovendien kan je er met een gerust hart om een Hitlerjugend-, of refo-schnitt vragen zonder dat de heren kappers je vol ongeloof en met domme kop staan aan te gapen. Hier weten kappers zelf ook heus wel wat goed is.

Het HuMobisme, dat weten jullie misschien niet, is een stroming waarvan wij (de HuMobisten Gyz La Rivière en Rufus Ketting) de hedendaagse afgevaardigden zijn, maar dat al eeuwen bestaat. Toen wij onlangs, voor een performance die we a.s. zondag in het MUSEUM ROTTERDAM (da’s het voormalige historisch museum Rotterdam) gaan doen, ons archief in zijn gedoken en wat oude paperassen, documenten en relikwieën hebben afgestoft, kwamen wij iets spectaculairs tegen. Namelijk stokoud materiaal dat gebruikt werd en gemaakt is tijdens oude vieringen van de Huemobistische (naar spelling 1811, archief Rotterdamsch Huemobistisch genootschap) feestdag ‘nieuwe stoff’.

Tijdens Nieuw Stof (Nieuwe Stoff) vieren de HuMobisten al sinds oudsher het gegeven van, de naam zegt het eigenlijk al, ‘nieuw spul’. Er is geen vaste vierdag, maar -en nu komt het- het ceremoniële gedeelte van de feestdag (die voor de rest uit zoveel mogelijk eten, drinken en het afsteken van voetzoekers bestaat) heeft al eerder plaatsgevonden in het Schielandhuis (dat jullie wel kennen als de plek waar thans het Museum Rotterdam is gevestigd) en niet zomaar voor een stelletje boeren, nee! dat heeft plaatsgevonden in aanwezigheid van Napoleon Bonaparte, die er volgens de Huemobistische statuten nogal van in de war was en ‘[...] vrijwel gelijk na den plaechtigheid om zijn avondtoilet heeft verzocht[...]’ (statuten Rotterdamsch Huemobistisch genootschap, par. 8E, MDCCCXI (1811).

Over het ritueel zelf willen we nog niet veel verklappen, behalve dat het met het bevrijden van een zekere geest en het verschonen van een zeker residu te maken heeft, maar och... het gaat er natuurlijk in de eerste plaats om dat je er bij bent geweest.

Great couple days in the food ’n drinks department. My favourite night shop’s selling (get this) ‘Duff Beer’. Shit yeah! The crate says the beer you thought you could only get at Moe’s. Pret-ty, pret-ty, pret ty cool huh? Not two days later I find out there’s one (1!!!) video store in town that’s still selling Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked icecream. Something to do with the owner of that shop buying the icecream all the way in Belgium… I’m not going to tell which video store it is, but they who must eat some now at least know there’s still some left. To quote the legendary Ice Cube ‘it was a good week’.

These are five records I designed the album covers of this year. They are Choca Alazaba’s ‘Reverse Bad Energy’ / The New Earth Group Prouctions, Benjamin Herman’s ‘Blue Sky Blonde / DOX Records (which became the best selling jazz record of the year thank you very much), Sir Ian’s ‘Apathology’ / Dying Giraffe Recordings, Rosa Ensemble’s ‘No Ark Dead Eel’ / Dying Giraffe Recordings and Hidde van Schie’s musical alias The 21st Century’s ‘Nocturnal Tellurian’. The last three are to be offically released in 2010 but they’re already done and sent out to be reviewed, so here’s a sneak peak anyway.

I’d like to say they’re my Album Top 5 of the Year, but that would be too much of a coincidence. They are, however, great records all five of ’em! So be on the lookout! Suus and I also did the design for the new The New Earth Group album ‘Eurafricarabia’ this year, which is to be released february 20 in Rotown (Rotterdam) and will be released through Excelsior Recordings.

I suppose this is my last post for the year, so I leave you all with the almost genuine dutch fireworks slogan: ‘You are a cunt, if you with fireworks stunt!’ and hopefully see you all in 2010!
