Kennen jullie die film van die robot die met de kennis die die van de toekomst heeft, terugkomt naar ‘het heden’ om korte metten te maken met de toekomst? Wat een slap geouwehoer, hè? Met de kennis die ik vandaag heb van gladde straten was ik een week geleden nooit die stoep op gelopen… Wat is er gebeurd met vooruit denken of leren van het verleden? Ik durf te wedden dat de bijbel vol staat met passende metaforen, maar ik kan er even geen bedenken, zo numb ben ik eigenlijk. Dit land wordt elke dag een beter land om te verlaten…

Hoe zat het ook weer (de laatste tien jaar in honderd woorden): de socialisten waren aan de macht, maar ze werden salonfähig en naar binnen gekeerd, bovendien: het ging allemaal iets te makkelijk, de economie was stabiel en niemand had iets te klagen. Niemand? Nou, er was uiteraard wel een en ander aan die verdraaide bureacratie op te merken. ‘Bureacratie eruit, politiestaat erin!’ moet toen een politieman-achtige sukkel gedacht hebben die er genoeg van had waarschuwingsschoten in de lucht te lossen, en hij begon een partij. Volkomen onvoorzien werd er uitgehaald met rechts door nota bene de leefbaren die op dat moment niet veel meer waren dan Jan Nagel’s Goede Doel. Ene professor Pim Fortuyn zag daar (uitgenodigd door de leefbaren, maar snel weer met ruzie weggestuurd) eindelijk hoe hij zijn eerderbedachte technocratische antipartij (LPF) kom vermommen als goedbedoelde ‘laat-ons-maar-effetjes-met-de-bezem-erdoor’-partij, maar werd al voor zelf iets te hebben kunnen laten zien, teruggefloten door een opgehitste en gehersenspoelde leeghoofd met een kromzwaard. ‘Wat krijgen we nu!?’ dacht toen bibberend Nederland ineens en masse! Dat gaat zomaar niet! Als er hier door religieuze tunnervisionairs die niet weten wat metaforen zijn geregeerd gaat worden, dan kunnen we dat zelf wel! Daar hebben wij Allah niet voor nodig, wij hebben Jehova(!!!) en prompt werd het CDA met al haar normen, waarden, hoekstenen en ander halfzacht geratel weer immens populair. Dus worden wij nu geregeerd door christenen die in het verleden leven en derhalve niet in de toekomst kunnen kijken (wat regeren natuurlijk feitelijk is).

He, had de PvdA maar wat beter opgelet. Of… kan natuurlijk ook; Hadden wij destijds maar als één man op D66 gestemd. Ik was in elk geval mijn handen in onschuld, I voted van Mierlo back in ’94!!

I always thought the film Turks Fruit (Turkish Delight – Paul Verhoeven, 1973) wasn’t all that! This of course could never been said out loud in certain company. De Vierde Man (The Fourth Man, 1983) is another one of those films that really didn’t quite do it for me. Soldaat van Oranje (Soldier of Orange, 1977) on the other hand is one of my alltime favorites and therefore a film I can quote from in multiple situations. (both Rutger Hauer and Jeroen Krabbé in a Dutch W.W.II epic underground resistance drama). Other mentionable Paul Verhoeven films are made in his Hollywood days and include classics such as Robocop (’87, – I saw a piece of it on TV the other day and it must have a scene I had never given that much attention when I was young, but which actually was quite beautiful. Furthermore I think its cult value is pretty strongly underlined -), Total Recall (’90, when Art School kids around me still thought they had to be like Joseph Beuys, guys like Paul Verhoeven and Oliver Stone (because of Wild Palms) were slowly making me see the light.), Basic Instinct (’92, that film’s so fucking great I’m not even going to explain why) and Starship Troopers (’97) about which I will only say this: Hell yeah!

Now my ‘oldest’ friend Vincent van D. gave me this book ‘Jezus van Nazaret’ (Jesus of Nazaret) by the great Paul Verhoeven for my birthday last year and took me to see the man debating with a handful of theologists and preachers in the Remonstrantse Kerk (of which I have told earlier on this blog) and it was just great to see how friendly everyone was, still a bit sceptic but pretty open minded and not at all judgemental. Now this last august I went on holidays and —finally—read the thing and it’s ace!

Now if you, like me, don’t need all the magic and hocus pocus to be all for a beautiful Godly kingdom and have always been looking for a truthful, human Jesus ‘Christ’ of Nazareth, this is your kind of book. Apart from making fucktastic films, Verhoeven was the sole non theologist allowed in the so called Jesus Seminar, a highly respected think tank of around seventy theologists, linguists and bible experts led by one Robert Funk (!), whose main aim was to free the historical figure Jesus of N. from the mythological biblical hero. Or, as Verhoeven likes to call it, free the bible from biblical-political spin added in (mainly) the years just after Jesus’ death by amongst many others Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It’s fun to read how Verhoeven uses nothing but common sense (combined with a whole lot of knowledge of the sacred book, which he first gained as an adolescent intrigued by all kinds of forms of the supernatural) and is sort of a Hercule Poirot, or Lieutenant Columbo in search of the truth behind two thousand years of people taking a run with ancient texts. What is even more important is that once Paul has stripped the New Testament of its lies, slanter and ludicrous magical mumbo jumbo it leaves him with first a pretty exciting book on an underground revolutionary running from large scale opression and second the image of a man/god who is mostly nothing but pure love. A loving ‘god’ supporting a loving message. Not too bad for a religious book now is it?

Especially when you’re brought up in a slightly christian fashion and never knew where to exactly put your mixed feelings on the whole ‘godly’ aspect of Christianity (good – evil, guilt – forgiveness, love – hate, life – death), this is one hell of a read! Een tijdje geleden las ik in de SPITS, één of andere bijna-krant, dat het CDA een ‘keurmerk’ in glossy’s wil bij foto’s waarin modellen zijn gephotoshopped. Sabine Uitslag (u leest dat goed), een visueel bovengemiddeld aantrekkelijk CDA-lid der tweede kamer, zegt in dat artikel “Er hoeft echt geen photoshopwaarschuwing bij een weggewerkt pukkeltje, maar wel als benen met de computer 15 centimeter langer worden gemaakt of de cupmaat wordt veranderd van A naar D.” Maar wat nu als de cupmaat wordt veranderd van D naar A? En wat is eigenlijk ‘beter’? C, D, of A?

Het maakt natuurlijk allemaal geen bal uit wat je met een foto allemaal wel niet kan uithalen. HALLO MENSEN! doen jullie mee? er wordt aan foto’s gesjoemeld omdat HET NU EENMAAL KAN! Om diezelfde reden zijn er ook zgn. special effects in films en staat er niemand met lepra afgebeeld op het gezellige familiespel ‘Wie is het?’. De grote portretschilders zullen in hun dagen ook wel een en ander aan cellulitis, vetrollen, beginnende kaalheid en harige pukkels hebben weggelaten. U raadt het al, er is dus gewoon weer NIETS aan de hand! Krijg je natuurlijk als standaard tegenwerping dat meisjes geestesziek worden vanwege dat soort gephotoshop. NEEN! Meisjes kotsen eten uit omdat ze problemen hebben die voorbij een photoshopkeurmerk gaan. Ze worden thuis geslagen of verwaarloosd, ze vinden hun moeder stom of hun ouders zijn net met veel gezeik gescheiden of zo en daarna gaan ze zichzelf pas haten en wordt het heel vervelend… Dat verzin ik niet, dat is gewoon onderzocht. En dan nog iets; het zou ook leuk zijn als mensen (en daar reken ik kamerleden ook onder, hoe ver ze ook van de samenleving af mogen staan vanwege drukte op de zaak of gewoon plain nerderigheid), eenieder dus, een ander zijn of haar schoonheid gewoon zou gunnen zonder dat ze meteen zelf ook zo mooi zouden moeten zijn. Stel je toch eens voor: een land gevuld met magazine-mensen. Komt gelijk al die reclame niet meer aan!

wow, great day for those who let television define their reality (me) yesterday! Andries Knevel, who’s a host and sort of human ‘flag ship’ for Dutch evangelical television network ‘EO’, came out of the biblical closet and claimed he felt uncomfortable with broadcasts (especially in the seventies) in which Darwin’s theory of evolution (natural selection meets genetic drift) is ridiculed or at least is being portrayed as a stupid, senseless theory for everyone who loves the lord knows he created this planet in just six days (he worked day and night), added a seventh or resting day and created ‘the week’. Now, loads of Christians nowadays believe that God was there to initiate life on earth millions of years ago and then nature went its own way. It makes sense, maybe that’s what ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega’ means; ‘since I’m the start of it, I am the whole of it’. These new school softliners believe these six days are merely put down in a figure of speech, as a metaphore for ‘a while’. You gotta admit ‘six days’ might not be such a good metaphore for ‘millions of years’, but hey… at least it’s the bible’s way of saying ‘since we’re starting of by saying millions of years may be written down as six days in this book, maybe you shouldn’t take the rest of it as literally as… well people who take everything literally.’ right?

You can only imagine what happened next. All the other left wing god free networks were licking their lips. The EO’s director of staff was invited to be interviewed on the ‘most important’ dutch TV show, pretty old people in the dutch bible belt were asked about their opinion on this heathen charade and of course the C-EO was ashamed to admit his own view on how-it-all-started, afraid to losing even more members from his community. YES! finally, the shift had begun. We’re all experts on how muslims shouldn’t interpret the Koran like people did a thousand years ago, but when it comes to the good ol’ bible it’s ‘hands off the word of God!’.

Anyway, I experienced my own Christian renaissance only a month or so ago. In a bright moment I dicovered I never really experienced duality in my feelings for the God of Abraham and Moses, I just thought my thoughts on the after life and the love of God were incompatible. God, to me, is the greatest symbol of love humans just had to invent in order to keep themselves sane and in order to come up with some sort of ‘universal’ law. Now, the afterlife is the reward… I guess some really smart, yet stupid people reckoned ‘people aren’t going to just be good out of love, we gotta promise ’em something majestic, besides once they fall for it we can pretty much make ’em do anything we want to.’ Now I don’t believe in the afterlife anymore (but I gotta admit I had my doubts on that one before, hi hi), but I do believe that you should be as just as you can to others (people and animals). In other words, I believe that men should be as Godly as humanly possible because of –let’s call it– Karma, or because we’re in this together. I also believe that the first people who came up with ‘religion’ had not thought of the possibility that generations after them might not be aware of the human origin of their religion. They may have hoped for it, but they certainly wouldn’t have thought it would become such a major and powerful thing in our society. In a way it must have been like with those who first discovered fire… Hense: Ἃγιον Φῶς.
